Contributions to the Community

One measure of the health of a community is the number and success of its nonprofit organizations. For years, WabiSabi has worked to support Moab’s nonprofits through financial and material means. Due to this support, Moab is home to dozens of thriving nonprofit organizations serving community needs as diverse as food production, domestic violence support, animal adoption, cultural awareness, environmental protection and more.

In 2008, WabiSabi raised nearly $40,000 for area causes through our thrift stores, our annual fashion show, and other community partnerships. That is nearly double what we raised the previous year and a sign that WabiSabi continues to increase its relevance and vitality in Moab. As the community continues to support us, we are better able to support the causes important to the community.

mealIn addition to our financial contributions, WabiSabi makes material donations to in-need communities and the organizations that support them. In 2008, we donated nearly $5,600 worth of goods to groups like Seekhaven, the Multicultural Center, the Senior Center, Free Meal, the Moab Free Health Clinic and others. These material donations include clothing and housewares that help families create a brand new start in a supportive community. Our gifts are also necessary for putting on community events such as meals, workshops and entertainment. Such donations support and enrich the lives of many.

In years past, WabiSabi has also hosted free community Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners for residents lacking the family or financial means to celebrate. In 2008, 350 Christmas meals were served. We also offer free “Hands-Up Brunches” on Sundays during Moab’s slow season in January and February. This is a difficult time for locals to earn money, so the meals are especially appreciated. Such events also serve to build community.

WabiSabi especially likes giving to the children of the region. One means is through our Kids Art Tent, a fixture at various events throughout the year. The tent offers crafts and lessons to area youth free of charge. From tie-dyeing to storytelling and belly dancing, kids get to take home art projects and memories to enjoy for years to come.

For all these reasons and more, the Moab Area Chamber of Commerce awarded its 2007 "Business of the Year Award" to WabiSabi. According to Chamber president Phil Mueller, "WabiSabi exemplifies service to the community and does an outstanding job in supporting the nonprofit and needs community.”
