2003 Workshops
Outreach to the public about nonprofit organizations and individuals working to sustain and improve our quality of life. Here is an opportunity for continued education in environmental practices, financial management, and cultural diversity.
In an effort to become a greater community resource, the board of directors voted to sponsor a series of workshops designed to build skills, promote cultural awareness, and introduce alternative and environmentally sensitive practices to the community as a whole.
The series began in September of 2003 with Alternative Building & Energy — an introduction to building with mud, straw, sand, tires and even recycled fabric. Also included in this workshop was a discussion on which alternative energy practices (such as solar and wind-powered) make the most sense for our homes and the environment. Presenters included local architect Susie Harrington, earthbag builders Donald Kiffmeyer and Kaki Hunter, and owner of SunEarth Construction, Keith Lindauer.
The second workshop in September of 2003 was entitled Entering the Heart of the World —a one-day journey into the vitality and determination we each possess to take part in the healing of our world. Based on the methods of Joanna Macy, participants engaged in interactive practices to reach and explore their deep responses to our world. Facilitators included Sarah Heffron, founder of the Youth Garden Project and Susie Harrington, an architect and Johanna Macy scholar.
Other workshops included Native Plant Identification, Your Money or Your Life, Financial Planning without Fear, and Bicycle Repair.
